What Is A Top Running Crane?

In general, top running crane refers to top running overhead crane. Top running cranes run on a fixed rail or track system on the top of each runway beam. As the whole crane systems run on the rails, so they are called top running crane. They can be configured in a single girder or double girder bridge design and are ideal for moving extremely heavy loads.

According the bridge design, a single girder top running crane utilizes an underhung trolley and hoist as lifting mechanism, while a double girder top running crane most often utilizes a top running trolley and hoist (double girder crab hoist or open winch) as lifting mechanism.
